Mitchell remembered at West Palm Beach tribute Edgar Mitchell, Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 14 moon mission in early 1971, was fondly recalled by family members and friends at a memorial tribute in West Palm Beach at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Held in a large and temporary outdoor tent, the event was delayed for 45 minutes by a cloudburst, but the storm failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees, as numerous quotes by the astronaut (including his memorable opinion of politicians) were recounted by various relatives and acquaintances. Among the approximately 400 guests were Apollo 13 LMP Fred Haise, who was one of the speakers, and Jack Schmitt, Apollo 17 LMP. Also in attendance were Laura Shepard Churchley, daughter of Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard, and Allen Roosa, son of Apollo 14 Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, as well as Rick Armstrong, son of Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong. NASA officials as well as government officials, including former U.S .Representative Mark Foley, Florida Lt. Governor Caros Lopez-Cantera, and West Palm Beach mayor Jerri Muoio and other local offficeholders. The celebration of Mitchell's life concluded with a flyover of NASA and Navy jet aircraft in a Missing Man formation. A reception was held in the museum.
